While demand for EVs and EV charging continues to grow across Europe, the dynamic policy landscape is generating many tailwinds and a few headwinds for EV charging growth. Even though elections in specific regions may evolve regional and national regulations, the larger trend remains strong: People, businesses and governments want EVs and EV charging across Europe.
While net-zero goals may shift in scope and new regulations and incentives come into play, the rapid ascent of EV charging adoption and demand is matched by the urgent growth of CO2 emissions. Emissions from road transportation have continued to climb since the pandemic changed how people live, work and shop, reaching 940 gigatons of CO2 across Europe in 2023.13
Luckily, regional and national policy are rapidly changing how people and goods move across the region.
