Outlook
What lies ahead for energy utilities?
As the world grapples with unprecedented challenges and hunts for fast solutions, few entities play a more vital role than utilities. This is especially true in Europe, where although the challenges are particularly evident, the capacity for rapid change is equally high.
The EU has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Non-EU countries such as Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom are similarly ambitious in their own ways. Set against the bigger picture of executing an energy revolution, utilities across the continent will understandably see their role in the mobility revolution as just one small piece of the puzzle. Especially given EV charging is new for most utilities and learning about it can be a challenge.
To meet their responsibilities as well as ensure that they don’t miss the opportunities that EV charging brings, energy suppliers will need to engage expert partners and deploy top-notch software solutions. These platforms must be hardware-agnostic, legally compliant, networked charging compatible and capable of adapting to new technology as well as the expected increases in demand.
As the incidence of climate-related disasters and market disruptions accelerates, society is looking to utilities for leadership.
